| June 28, 2006 Send a Kid to Camp

Jason, Faye and Robert |
The first four participants have been chosen in our Send a
Kid to Camp project. The program aims to enhance a child's self-esteem, foster learning
and encourage growth, while making friends and learning new skills at a local summer camp.
Most of the participants chosen to attend camp never had the
privilege of sleeping in a tent, cooking a meal under an open sky or enjoying stories
around a campfire. Now they have a chance to enjoy an action-packed week where they will
experience what it is like to spend a few days hiking, and exploring everything that our
beautiful island has to offer.
The children pictured here were very excited about going to
camp this summer and having a wonderful experience to share with their classmates when
they return to school in September.

a Kid to Camp Fundraiser

Seen here at the Mayflower Mall with the first prize in the Send a
Kid to Camp draw, is Women's Committee President Faye Hanna. Faye was assisted with ticket
sales by committee friend, Marlene Miles. |
To help raise funds for the "Send a Kid to Camp"
campaign, members of the Breton Local's Women's committee spent a few hours canvassing
shoppers at Sydney's Mayflower Mall.
The project was initiated to send children from low-income
families to a local camp for one week this summer. Their hopes are to send at least one
child from Sydney Mines, North Sydney, Sydney, Glace Bay and New Waterford.
Ticket sales began on May 19, 2006 with the first prize
being a painting donated by Mary Yurchesyn; a dozen lobsters donated by J.K. Marine and a
gift certificate for $25.00 are the second prize; the third prize is a $50.00 gas
certificate and $20.00 Sobey's gift certificate.
The draw date is July 7th, 2006 with all proceeds going
towards sending a child to camp. |
