COMMENTS: The divisions caused by the CTI are reason enough to have a second look at this agreement. The only way to do this is to reject it and look for a second opinion, this time from the members who are the sole authority of the union. What is required here is a big dose of trust. Never in my 38 years experience has there been any reason to trust this employer. Nothing in what I read here changes my opinion in that regard. I put my trust in brothers like Philippe Arbour and the group of seven. What's the hurry? The more hurry the less speed. We cannot screw the temporary members of this union, not after the years of fighting on their behalf. who's next, the RRMSs or the part-timers? Let the employer go back thirty years--I have been there and things got better. Betrayal does not look good on any union's resume. Solidarity forever--not whenever!!!!

COMMENTS: Hello Brothers and Sisters-

Thanks for carrying all the varying opinions on your website. We appreciate the free exchange of ideas to help us make an informed decision on this new contract. I have put copies of letters for both sides on our bulletin boards and CUPW info books. Don't know which way the vote will go ... thanks for the input and your efforts to provide space. (The whole website is terrific !)

Best Wishes,

REPLY: Hi Barb, thanks for the kind words. We have strived to present both sides of a contentious issue from the beginning. Like you, I don't know which way the vote will go, but at least I am armed with enough information to make an informed decision. Take care, Robert A. Chant, Webmaster.

COMMENTS: This is the first time I've logged on to your website, and I read with interest the postings. As we sit in a potential strike situation, I just wanted to let you know that we are not sitting back and accepting whatever the first offer is. We are not pawns in the corporation's game, to be bent and broken when we are finished working at Canada Post. As for the CTI I think we are performing NOW, not being respected NOW for our work, and certainly not being respected monetarily, so what would be different? They get to stand their with their clipboards and tell you we've once again disappointed them and not met their levels of expectations and, oh sorry, you STILL don't get paid for your efforts. Thanks, but no thanks. We as workers go to work, do a good day's work, and don't have to back in the door for our pays (such as they are) now. We don't need someone to tell us that, we need proper time values for work we keep squeezing in to our 8 hour days, workers replaced when they retire, inside and out, serious consideration for health and safety and a decent wage.
REPLY: Hi Debbie, you certainly make some very good points. I hope this will be the start of many visits to our site for you. Take care, Robert A. Chant, Webmaster.

COMMENTS: Hello Brothers and Sisters,

Really enjoying your webpage, very informative, keeping me up to date with a honest and fresh view of negotiations and offers. Been here 32 yrs, know the bullshit that the boss throws at us, many of the younger people don't know or care about the struggle that we won after years fighting for our future, to lay down now and allow cpc to run us over, would be a great loss, hopefully we can instill those values of the struggle within then, and to defeat the boss. Thank you for being so strong. The longer the line the shorter the strike, we need a strong no vote to tell them we aren't giving up and rolling over.

REPLY: Hi Glen, thanks for the great support. We do have many younger activists that have never seen a strike in this local too. This weekend most of them are participating in a course that will furnish them with some of the basic tools they need to stand up and fight. We need a great deal of education for these first-time stewards, but most importantly, we have a group that wants to learn. Take care, Robert A. Chant, Webmaster.

REPLY: Hi Doug, there are a lot of members in our local that know solidarity cannot be taken for granted; it has to be built in struggle. Hopefully, all locals will be united and we can achieve what needs to be done. Take care, Robert A. Chant, Webmaster.

COMMENTS: Recently I started building a web site for Barrie Local 503, (with HTML 4.0) and decided to check out other Local's sites. Yours, Breton Local 117, is a superb site; I am both inspired and intimidated, it is absolutely amazing! Did you use a web site building programme, if so which one and would you consider adding podcasts?
REPLY: Hi Nancy,

The software I use for construction of the site includes: Photoshop CS (for the graphics), FrontPage 97 (for the HTML) and Core FTP (for uploading). The pages are written in ASP and each page includes a hard-coded body and a header and footer file to get uniform formatting. As for podcasts, it is something I have not explored for the site but I did make use of RSS feeds for some content.

I am not sure if you are aware of this or not, but I do have an open offer for all CUPW locals desiring a website. I am willing to help with the design and initial set-up of a site. I am willing to do the work for free, but if you feel a need to compensate, your local can make a donation to our women’s committee.

Take care,
Robert A. Chant, Webmaster.

COMMENTS: I enjoyed reading your news information. I feel proud that the members of the Breton Local are active and taking on issues that are important to many members. I worked on the Mining the Connections tour with Garry Leech and I also visited Colombia on a humanitarian tour about five years ago.

Workers around the world need to support each other. We cannot work in isolation of what is happening worldwide. Colombian workers are under attck each day and thousands have died because they believe that there is a better life for everyone.Union leaders are especially targeted and many die or disappear.

Continue the good work and it would be great to see postal workers involved in the solidarity work in Colombia.

REPLY: Ruth, thank you for the feedback and very encouraging words. Breton is trying to find ways to bring local attention to the plight of unionist and miners in Colombia. The majority of our local comes from mining roots, and there once was a time when the term "blood coal" could have been used to portray mining in Cape Breton. Take care, Robert A. Chant, Webmaster.
